Camping in the hood

It's been over a week and a half since Ike made land fall on the east end of Galveston Island. We have been camping in the drive way as we have not had power since the storm hit. This is one of those times that you are really glad that you have an RV. The truck camper has been a life saver this week as we have used it for the fridge, cooking and sleeping. We had no water pressure for five days and it was nice to get that back (a nice hot shower can make you feel at least human). Many in our area are still without power and my heart goes out to them.

Fortunately we had cooler weather after the storm and that sure helped a lot. The cooler temps really made it bearable. We got to know our neighbors a lot better as we would all get together in the evenings and have dinner. Cooking was especially nice with the gas appliance's in the camper. We have all electric appliances in the house so the camper came in handy for food preparation.

While damage to the house was minimal (untill yesterday when the AC uint died from the power clicking on and off). We lost about a hundred feet of fence and had water come in one window so the carpet got soaked. I did get it to dry out with a fan and kept the mildew to a minimum.

I had mentioned in a previous blog that getting a generator was a good idea. Well I have to say that a generator is a necesity at this point and I will never be without one again. The Honda 2000 ran non stop for five day's untill we got a 5700 watt McCulloch as we thought we would be with out power for at least another week. The Honda kept us in power and that help keep us in touch with the world by powering the TV in the camper. We actually ran the wash machine of the generator once we got power so we could have clean clothes to wear.

We also went back in time when we brought the TV in the house from the camper. This TV is the one we bought for our first camper twenty years ago. We put on the rabbit ears complete with tin foil for better reception.

We did make it up to Lake Conroe Thousand Trails on Sunday to check out our Mobile Suite and found that it had fared well. Lake Conroe TT is with out power and will be closed till Friday. We really wished that they would have opened it sooner as it would have been nice to head up there even if we had to power the fiver with the generator. I will have more on "Camping in the hood" later.

See you on the road..........
